This is an extract from the Foreword to Hekate Her Sacred Fires by the author Sorita d’Este.  It is probably best read after, or at least in conjunction with the extract “FIRE VISION” which can also be read on this website at http://sacredfires.co.uk/?page_id=76

What is Her Sacred Fires?

The title of this book was inspired by the vision which ignited it, it also has many additional layers of significance, all of which are equally important.

Her Sacred Fires are also the fires which burn, and have burned in the past or will burn in future, on altars and shrines erected in her honour.  They are the fires which will be lit all around the world when the Rite of Her Sacred Fires is celebrated on the Full Moon on 27th May 2010 to celebrate the release of this book.

Her Sacred Fires are also the flames of Hekate’s Torches, being the light which guides the initiate through the pathways of initiation into the mysteries.  The flames from her torches are the light which provides safety in the darkness when travelling from one place to another on roads which are filled with unseen dangers.  The fires of her torches are also weapons, because fire burns and can destroy and purify that which is undesired and dangerous to us and can also in this context be used for protection.

Her torches can likewise be seen as possibly representing the Evening and Morning Stars (the planet Venus) which as the first and last star of evening and morning encloses the darkness of night between them, but equally the light of the day.  It is even possible to speculate, that the torches are the Sun (Helios) and the Moon (Selene), who provide light in an otherwise dark world and like the Morning and Evening stars, enclose night and day between them in their never ending journeys through the sky.

But most of all, Her Sacred Fires are the individuals who understand that the goddess can be perceived through the formless fires, and that hers are the fires which ignite both love and passion, joy and sadness – in equal measures.  Whichever way you choose to interpret it, her torches are always fires of illumination.

The mysteries have the ability to diminish artificial boundaries, to reach out beyond that which can be seen and perceived when we restrict ourselves and bind ourselves to the illusions we are subjected to every day.  To perceive them is effortless, but entering them by crossing the boundary takes courage and wisdom – to do so with fear and folly is an act only the really foolish would indulge in.
